* Under what conditions are tomato flowers best pollinated?
The tomato is a self-pollinating plant. Tomato pollen is heavy and not easily carried by the wind; therefore, it lands on the stigma of the pistil of the same flower 2-3 days before the ovules fully mature.
It is very important to consider this when producing hybrid seeds. To form seeds, stamens with immature pollen are removed from the flower (emasculation), and it is pollinated with pollen taken from a flower of another variety.
Flower fertilization occurs at an air temperature of +24...+32°C. Lower or higher temperatures lead to pollination failure.
At high temperatures (above +32°C), the pistil elongates above the stamens (heterostyly), and pollination does not occur.
